the assertion switch

volume 07 of 14indexed by primitive22 sections28 cross-references07-MOOD.md

1 catalogued defect in this volume. Each is shown against the passage it is about rather than corrected in place — the markdown stays the source of truth.

Dial [modo]. The single highest-value document in this reference, because the subjunctive is where B1 speakers stall and because almost every explanation of it is wrong.

1Throw out "doubt and emotion"§

The standard teaching — "the subjunctive expresses doubt, emotion, desire, and unreality" — fails immediately:

  • Me alegra que *estés* acá. You're definitely here. No doubt. Subjunctive.
  • Creo que *viene*. That's a belief, not a certainty. Indicative.
  • Es verdad que *está enfermo. Certain. Indicative — while es posible que esté*** is subjunctive.

A rule that mispredicts its own headline cases isn't a rule. Here is the one that works:

INDICATIVE: the clause is ASSERTED — put forward as holding in the world. SUBJUNCTIVE: the clause is ENTERTAINED — its content is wanted, feared, denied, pending, or merely framed, but not put forward as fact.

Test any sentence by asking: am I claiming this is so, or am I doing something else with the idea?

  • Creo que viene — I am claiming he's coming (with a hedge). asserted indicative
  • No creo que venga — I'm specifically declining to claim it. subjunctive
  • Quiero que vengas — the coming doesn't exist yet; it exists inside my wanting. subjunctive
  • Me alegra que estés acá — I'm not informing you that you're here. I'm reacting to it. The clause is framed, not claimed. subjunctive

2The forms — quick reference§

Full derivation in 05 §6.

Mood/tenseFormationExample
Present subj.yo form − o + opposite voweltengo *tenga; hablo *hable
Imperfect subj.3pl preterite − ron + ratuvieron *tuviera; fueron *fuera
Perfect subj.haya + participlehaya hablado
Pluperfect subj.hubiera + participlehubiera hablado

Six irregular present subjunctives: sea, vaya, haya, sepa, dé, esté. The imperfect subjunctive has zero irregulars — the derivation from 3pl preterite is exceptionless.

3The triggers, systematically frequency 3 of 3, daily§

Eight classes. Together they cover essentially all real usage.

3.1Volition and influence — always subjunctive frequency 3 of 3, daily§

Wanting, asking, ordering, permitting, forbidding, advising. The subordinate event exists only as the object of someone's will.

Quiero que *vengas. · Te pido que me escuches. · Me dijo que fuera. · No dejes que te afecte*.

Verbs: querer, desear, pedir, rogar, exigir, ordenar, mandar, permitir, dejar, prohibir, impedir, aconsejar, recomendar, sugerir, insistir en, esperar (hope), preferir, necesitar

3.2Emotion and evaluation — always subjunctive frequency 3 of 3, daily§

3.3Doubt, denial, negated assertion frequency 3 of 3, daily§

Dudo que *venga. · No creo que sea cierto. · Niego que haya pasado. · No parece que funcione*.

Asserted indicativeNot asserted subjunctive

3.4Impersonal expressions — split by assertion frequency 3 of 3, daily§

The cleanest demonstration of the principle, because the two lists divide exactly along it:

Subjunctive — evaluates or modalizesIndicative — asserts truth

3.5Purpose — always subjunctive frequency 3 of 3, daily§

Your bankthe phrase bank line: para que *rinda*** — "for it to deliver."

3.6Time — subjunctive only when future-contingent frequency 3 of 3, daily§

The trap: the same conjunction takes either mood, and the dial decides.

Future/unrealized subjunctivePast/habitual indicative

Your bankthe phrase bank line: cuando *llegue*, te escribo — subjunctive time clause, present-for-future main verb (06 §8).

3.7Concession — subjunctive when not conceded as fact frequency 2 of 3, secondary§

Aunque is the interesting one:

MoodMeaning
Aunque *es* caro, lo compro.indicativeIt is expensive (fact, conceded) — "even though"
Aunque *sea* caro, lo compro.subjunctiveIt may be expensive (hypothetical) — "even if"

3.8Condition and exception — subjunctive frequency 2 of 3, secondary§

A menos que *venga. · Con tal de que funcione. · En caso de que llueva. · Siempre que puedas. · Salvo que haya* problema.

4Subjunctive in relative clauses frequency 3 of 3, daily§

Not a trigger word — the antecedent's specificity decides.

Specific referent exists indicativeNon-specific / hypothetical subjunctive

Reduplicative formulas frequency 2 of 3, secondary — fixed and very frequent: sea lo que *sea (whatever it is) · pase lo que *pase (whatever happens) · digan lo que *digan (whatever they say) · como *sea (however / whatever it takes) · donde *sea · cuando *quieras

6Si-clauses — three circuits frequency 3 of 3, daily§

The cleanest system in Spanish grammar, and it's usually taught as chaos. Three circuits, each with a fixed pair:

Circuitsi clauseMain clauseMeaning
1 · Realpresent indicativepresent / future / imperativeSi *puedo*, voy. — If I can, I'll go
2 · Unreal presentimperfect subjunctiveconditionalSi *pudiera*, iría. — If I could, I'd go
3 · Unreal pastpluperfect subjunctiveconditional perfectSi *hubiera podido*, habría ido. — If I'd been able, I'd have gone

Your set piece decoded frequency 3 of 3, daily:

Si no *tuvieras que trabajar, y supieras que no podés fracasar, ¿en qué gastarías* el tiempo?

Circuit 2, with two imperfect subjunctives sharing one conditional payoff. The world is explicitly not asserted (tuvieras, supieras), and the conditional reports from inside it (gastarías). Same machinery as English "if you didn't have to / how would you" — English marks it by shifting tense, Spanish by dedicated morphology.

Other subjunctive-with-conditional structures frequency 2 of 3, secondary: como si + imperfect subj — always: habla *como si supiera ojalá + imperf subj for wishes about now: ojalá *pudiera ni que + imperf subj: ¡ni que *fuera* gratis!
